Funded by the European Union Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid
In partneship with CHAD International and the International Rescue Committee
At just 14 years old, Umar from Gwoza, Borno State, thought school was out of reach. With no money for fees or a uniform, he spent his days knitting caps to support his family.
That changed when he joined the Accelerated Basic Education Programme (ABEP), delivered by CHAD International and IRC. For the first time, Umar had books, teachers, and a safe classroom where he could learn.
In his own words:
“This program has given me the opportunity to learn. That is why I go every day and I really enjoy the lessons.”
“I want to be a teacher so I can help my parents.”
“I feel safe there because there are teachers there.”
Today, Umar dreams of becoming a teacher and giving back to his community. His story is a reminder of the power of education to change lives.
