Halima is an ambitious 15-year-old girl from Gwoza who dreams of becoming a health worker. She hopes to study nursing one day so she can support people in her community. “I want to be a nurse so I can help the sick,” she says with certainty. Her parents are proud of her ambition and are committed to supporting her education.
Despite her determination, Halima struggled with basic arithmetic and often found it difficult to understand English instructions in class. To help her catch up, her teachers recommended that she join the remedial learning classes established by the International Rescue Committee (IRC) in partnership with CHAD International. These after-school sessions take place within the school and are designed to support learners who need extra academic help.
With her parents’ approval, Halima enrolled in the program. Along with receiving lessons in Mathematics, English, and other core subjects, she was provided with a school bag, books, and writing materials to support her learning.
Since joining the remedial classes, Halima’s performance has improved significantly. Her teachers report that she can now solve basic addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division problems with confidence. While she is not yet fluent in speaking or writing English, she now understands statements and instructions clearly
